Janani S. Rana is a Certified Family Law Specialist and trial lawyer whose practice is devoted exclusively to complex, high-net-worth family law matters in Orange County, California.
Janani represents clients in divorce and parentage matters involving substantial estates, sophisticated compensation structures, business interests, fiduciary issues, and contested custody disputes. She is frequently trusted in matters involving executives, business owners, professionals, entrepreneurs, and spouses with complex marital estates, where the outcome often depends on understanding both the legal framework and the financial architecture of the case.
Her practice regularly involves litigating, negotiating, and resolving issues involving executive compensation, qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation, equity compensation, restricted stock units, stock options, business valuation, cash flow available for support, tracing and characterization of separate property claims, reimbursement claims, family residence valuation, life insurance, and attorney fee disputes.
Janani is known for her command of complex financial, property, support, and custody issues, her strategic judgment, and her ability to translate sophisticated legal, financial, and personal issues into clear, strategic, and persuasive advocacy. She has extensive evidentiary hearing and trial experience across the full range of family law issues, including custody, child support, spousal support, domestic violence, property division, business valuation, characterization and reimbursement claims, and attorney fees.
Janani has always been drawn to the “why” beneath every story. She studied Political Theory at the University of California, San Diego, and spent her junior year abroad at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, where she studied South Asian cultures, traveled extensively, and developed a lasting appreciation for context, perspective, and the forces that shape people’s decisions. That curiosity ultimately led her to USC Gould School of Law, where she found her professional home in family law, a practice that combines litigation, financial analysis, human behavior, and real-world consequence.
While at USC Gould, Janani sought out early courtroom and public interest experience. She clerked for the Honorable Amy Pellman and the Honorable Harvey Silberman of the Los Angeles Superior Court, gaining early exposure to the legal and emotional complexity of family law cases. She also worked for a well-known family law firm and interned with the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law, and the Western Center on Law & Poverty. Those experiences shaped her understanding that family law is not a narrow practice area; it is often where property rights, financial security, parenting, safety, and personal identity converge.
Since graduating, Janani has focused on mastering the craft of family law trial practice. In addition to ongoing advanced education, she is a three-time graduate of the National Family Law Trial Institute in Houston, Texas, one of the country’s most rigorous training programs for family law attorneys. She has completed the full Trial Institute, the Advanced Cross-Examination Institute, and the Business Valuation Institute. She has also completed the National Institute for Trial Advocacy’s Trial Skills Institute.
Janani’s work has earned consistent peer recognition. She has been recognized by Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers for her work in family law, was named a Super Lawyers Rising Star for four consecutive years, and was selected as a Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch honoree for three consecutive years, including in its inaugural edition.
Janani is regularly invited to teach and write about family law. She presents to attorneys on issues involving business valuation, custody litigation, move-away strategy, and complex property issues. She has served as a guest lecturer in USC Gould’s Community Property course, where she has taught on the characterization and valuation of life insurance assets, disability benefits, and severance-related issues in divorce. Most recently, she served as an instructor for the AAML Southern California Trial Basics live practicum.
Janani is also deeply involved in the legal community. She is the founding President of the South Asian Bar Association of Orange County. Before helping launch SABA OC, she spent nearly a decade serving on the board of the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California, including as its President in 2019. She currently serves as Secretary of the Orange County Women Lawyers Association and remains active in the Orange County legal community, including through OCBA’s Mommy Esq., the OCBA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, and the Orange County Unity Bar.
Janani lives in Irvine with her husband and two children. Her life outside the office informs the way she practices law: with discipline, perspective, and a clear understanding that legal disputes affect real families in lasting ways. As the mother of a child with complex medical needs, she is passionate about raising awareness for the pediatric special needs and epilepsy communities.
When she is not in court, working with clients, or supporting the legal community, Janani is spending time with her family, learning to play golf, and thinking about what comes next, whether that is another trial strategy, another community initiative, or another opportunity to help someone navigate one of life’s most consequential transitions.
For attorneys, fiduciaries, executives, and professional advisors, Janani is a trusted Orange County resource for complex family law litigation involving high-net-worth estates, business interests, executive compensation, and sophisticated financial issues.
